Just as you and your groom should be discussing the budget and expenses
for your wedding, you need to be talking about financial planning for your
married life together.
Please do not skirt and dance around this
issue.
The current finances of each of you needs to be revealed and talked about.
Also, besides the topic of children and intimacy, finances, by far, is one
of the most important issues that can make or break a relationship.
Years ago, after being out of the country teaching in Universities for
several years, I had returned to this country to go into business. I was walking down
the street with an acquaintance who remarked to me that she had just
gotten a new C.D. I wondered to myself: Why is this person telling me
about her personal finances? I was a very intelligent person, but
uninformed about what was then the latest method of listening to music.
That tells you my age! I thought she was talking about bank’s
Certificates of Deposit.
If you don’t know what those are, then I really feel old! Ask your
parents!
Besides C.D.’s, personal savings, your individual financial situations
(including credit cards and debts), you need to talk about costs if you
will be assisting children with college, investments, mortgages and home
ownership, savings and retirement.
Ask friends or relatives
for the names of professional and competent
Financial Advisors or Financial Consultants (or call the ad in this book)
who are knowledgeable about family financial planning.
You will have to pay for the
service, but it will be the best money you spend as a husband and wife.
